NH SeniorsJune 2008 - The North Harmony Senior Citizens recently presented residents of the Heritage Rehab & Skilled Nursing facilities with “lap robes.”  The lap robes, which are made with colorful material that is donated to the seniors group, provide warmth and brighten a resident’s day.

Emogene Saulsgiver started the craft class in 1982 and Rita Lescynski, currently leads the crafts program for the North Harmony Senior Citizens.  Melanie Lescynski, Speech Therapist for Heritage Ministries Management Company, approached the senior citizens group about making lap robes for the residents.  “My granddaughter recently contacted me about making lap robes for the residents at Heritage Village as a craft project for our club,” states Rita.  “Since the request was made, we have joyfully donated several lap robes as well as walker pockets for the organization.”

The benefits of making the lap robes are two-fold.  “Our craft program not only allows us to join together and enjoy each other’s company, but it also gives us the satisfaction of knowing our work will help brighten a nursing home resident’s day,” explains Emogene, craft program participant.  The group will continue to make and donate the lap robes to the Heritage Rehab & Skilled Nursing facilities as well as other nursing facilities throughout the county.

The North Harmony Senior Citizens craft class meets regularly on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., at the North Harmony Senior Citizens Center in Stow.  Since the group’s inception in 1982, they have grown to over 100 members.  The North Harmony crafts class is sponsored by RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program). Anyone needing lap robes should contact RSVP at (716) 665-3038.
