October 2008 - On September 26, Esther Benz celebrated her 90th birthday with a ride on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle surrounded by many friends, family, and curious on-lookers at Heritage Village Rehab & Skilled Nursing (Gerry). This was not just an ordinary ride, this was Esther’s inaugural motorcycle experience. When she turned 89 last year, she wanted to do something special for her 90th birthday. With the help of Heritage Village staff members and her family, Esther’s wish to ride a motorcycle on her 90th birthday became a reality. Dressed complete in a leather jacket, chaps, and helmet, Esther was treated to a six-mile motorcycle ride from Heritage Village Rehab & Skilled Nursing through Gerry and the surrounding area. Nearly 30 members of the Glory Riders Christian Motorcycle Association, Harley-Davidson of Jamestown, and Heritage Village staff and friends were present to escort Esther on her inaugural ride. Jeff Ondrey, Heritage Village Administrator states, “We are extremely grateful to Brian Reid from the Harley- Davidson of Jamestown dealership for driving Esther and providing the Harley for this special event. And thanks to all the riders who accompanied Esther on this trip. She is an inspiration to all that we are never too old to try something new.” When asked what she thought about her accomplishment, Esther joyfully responded, “I don’t know why I waited so long!” In describing the event, Heritage Village social worker Alba Arters commented, “We are very appreciative of all who participated in one way or another. Esther's family members were overwhelmed with the enthusiasm and love showered on her. This was truly a unique one-of-a-kind event.” |
