Retirement Campus Resident Constructs Annual Igloo

NB_iglooFebruary 2011 - Nancy Bertch, a resident at Heritage Village Retirement Campus in Gerry, NY, has constructed an igloo outside of her home in honor of the winter season.  For over thirty years, she has made building an igloo a winter tradition.  This year’s structure is three feet wide at its base and Nancy is able to successfully stand up inside.

A tradition that has stood the test of time, Nancy built her first igloo with a foster child that she and her late husband Roy had taken into their home.  In years since, her children and grandchildren have given their time and talents as well.

Nancy states, “The igloo has been such a wonderful tradition for me and my family.  I challenge myself each and every year to make the igloo bigger and better than the last.  The project is wonderful for me because it keeps me active, engaged, and outdoors with nature.”

As the winter season comes to a close, the igloo will melt away, but the memories of another successful igloo building year are still fresh in Nancy’s mind knowing that come next winter, the challenge begins again.
