Shine The Light on Domestic Violence Awareness

In November 2016, Heritage employee Shari Robbins lost her life as a victim of domestic violence as she was on her way to work.

Nearly one in four women in the US reports experiencing violence by a current or former spouse or boyfriend at some point in her life, and 1 in 7 women and 1 in 18 men have been stalked by an intimate partner during their lifetime to the point in which they felt very fearful or believed that they or someone close to them would be harmed or killed.

As an organization, Heritage is committed to do all that they can do to prevent this type of tragedy from happening again to one of their own, or anyone else who might be dealing with a similar issue.

Heritage Director of Marketing and Development Lisa Haglund said, “While there are no words to express the emotions we felt on the day we lost an employee to Domestic Violence, our goal at Heritage is to raise awareness about the impact that domestic violence has and provide resources for those who are affected . We hope that our efforts will support not only Heritage employees, but the Anew center and make a difference in Chautauqua county.”

This year, Heritage will sponsor the “Shine The Light” campaign from October 19- November 10 in conjunction with The NYS day of Domestic Violence Awareness on October 19. Purple Shine The Light t-shirts will be available for a suggested donation of $10 at any Heritage location, and purple domestic violence awareness bracelets are available for purchase for $2.  All proceeds will benefit the Salvation Army Anew Center, which aids local victims of domestic violence. The Shine The Light campaign will see special awareness events at each Heritage location beginning on October 19, and will end with a day of remembrance and awareness for Shari Robbins on November 10.  In addition, Heritage will be collecting donations at all of their facilities, including Heritage Living, at the Chautauqua Mall, for the Anew Center. Items accepted for donation include hair brushes, hair ties, nail polish, nail polish remover, manicure sets/supplies, note pads, feminine hygiene products, school supplies, slippers, hats and gloves.
