On June 26, 2026, Heritage Ministries gathered to honor a remarkable milestone: the 100th birthday of longtime resident Loretta Mitchell. This centennial celebration marked more than just the passage of time; it honored a life beautifully lived, defined by an unwavering faith, a resilient spirit, and a deep-rooted connection to Heritage that spans generations.
A Lifelong Relationship with Heritage
Loretta’s history with Heritage dates back to her childhood. Long before she became a resident, her father served faithfully on the Board of Directors for the Gerry Homes from 1937 to 1976. For 40 years, he dedicated himself to the organization, praying constantly for its enduring mission to provide compassionate, dignified care.
Growing up with this legacy of service, Loretta witnessed firsthand the values of faith and community that form the foundation of Heritage. Decades later, that foundation would become her own sanctuary.
A Shared Journey Home
Following the passing of their parents, Loretta and her sister made the decision to step into a new chapter together. Looking for a place where they could retire without concern, the sisters moved to the Heritage Homestead Campus in Gerry, New York, to share an independent living home.
Navigating life’s transitions hand-in-hand, their sisterly bond served as an anchor. The Gerry homes quickly transformed from an unfamiliar place into a true community, surrounding them with safety, comfort, and friendship. Following a later illness that required hospitalization, Loretta transitioned smoothly into assisted living at Bergquist Memorial, where she has continued to thrive. In total, the Heritage campus has been her home for 30 years.
A Century of Active Living and Grace
Lifting spirits wherever she goes, Loretta brings a rich history with her. Having lived through the Great Depression and built a successful career as a secretary for elite department stores, she embodies a rare blend of elegance, work ethic, and resilience.
Even at 100 years old, Loretta refuses to slow down. She remains an active and vital part of the Bergquist Memorial community, well-known for her sharp mind and her talent for mending garments completely by hand—a testament to her lifelong dedication to care and precision.
Celebrating 100 Years of Dignity and Care
As Heritage Ministries honors Loretta’s milestone birthday, her story stands as a beautiful reflection of the organization’s holistic mission.
