If you take a stroll down the hallway at Heritage Park, a colorful and welcoming sight immediately greets you: puzzles everywhere. Completed jigsaws line the hallway walls and fill the shared alcove that has naturally transformed into the community’s unofficial puzzle room. At the center of it all is Maureen Casler, whose dedication to the craft has turned this shared space into a vibrant hub of connection, laughter, and creativity.
Maureen has called Heritage Park home for five years, but her love for puzzles goes all the way back to her childhood.
A Lifelong Love of the Craft
“I started doing puzzles when I was a kid,” Maureen recalls. Growing up, her father worked construction, which meant winters were often tight. Puzzling became an easy, engaging way for the family to spend quality time together. “Dad would just bring out the card table, set up a puzzle to do, and we’d stop and work on it, talk, and listen…”
Over decades, Maureen’s passion for piecing together intricate designs never faded. Today, her workspace is thoughtfully organized for the biggest projects—including massive 2,000-piece challenges. She uses a dedicated table alongside a set of eight stacking sort trays, a Christmas gift that lets her separate pieces by shade and pattern.
While Maureen prefers classic flat jigsaw puzzles, her display also honors dear friendships. On nearby shelves and surfaces, completed 3D puzzles—such as an intricate puzzle vase—stand on display. They were crafted by a close friend of Maureen’s who passed away at Heritage Park a couple of years ago. Keeping those pieces out and cherished is Maureen’s way of honoring her friend’s memory and talent.
An Open Invitation and a Shared Space
Though tucked in a common nook at the end of the hall, Maureen makes sure the space belongs to everyone. Puzzling with her is an open invitation: “Anybody is welcome,” Maureen smiles. “I don’t say, ‘No, this is mine!'”
Whether it’s fellow residents placing a piece as they walk by, visitors stopping to admire the progress, or staff pulling up a chair, the room fosters an easy sense of togetherness. On any given day, you might find Jennifer Rodriguez, Activities Assistant, sitting across the table from Maureen, chatting about family, pets, and finding that next elusive edge piece.
The Unofficial DJ of Heritage Park
Puzzles aren’t Maureen’s only contribution to the community atmosphere. She has also earned a reputation as Heritage Park’s unofficial DJ.
With headphones in or music playing softly for those around her, Maureen’s playlist has a little bit of everything: Eric Clapton, The Eagles, Def Leppard, Tim McGraw, Luke Bryan, Barry Manilow, and upbeat favorites like Belinda Carlisle and “Walking on Sunshine.” When she heads down to the common areas, staff and residents often look to Maureen to set the soundtrack for the day. For Maureen, music is a personal sanctuary and a joyful way to lift the spirits of those around her.
Gratitude for the Care Team
When reflecting on her five years at Heritage Park, Maureen shares sincere appreciation for the people who make up the community. She enjoys the familiar faces and gave a warm shoutout to staff like Sabrina Anderson, a dedicated nurse who is currently transitioning into a new role as Nurse Manager. Maureen and her peers recognize the hard work and heart the entire team brings to the building every single day.
Through her love of music, her welcoming spirit, and a hallway filled with finished artwork, Maureen Casler has built a warm, creative micro-community at Heritage Park—reminding us all that home is pieced together with kindness, friendship, and shared passions.
