On June 23, Gene and Lois Norris marked an extraordinary milestone: 70 years of marriage. To sit with them in their room at Heritage is to witness a masterclass in love, resilience, and true partnership. While seven decades of marriage is rare, Gene is quick to remind anyone that their milestone wasn’t built overnight—it was carefully crafted on a foundation laid long before they ever walked down the aisle.
A Foundation Built on the “Right Side of the River”
Their story began in Elmira, New York, divided by the local river. Gene lived on the north side, and Lois lived on the south side. Despite the geographic divide, a greater force brought them together at a local Methodist church where they both attended. Gene, two years older but just a year ahead in school, was serving as the president of the youth fellowship when Lois joined.
Instantly smitten, Gene began what he fondly calls “courting her”.
“I would leave my house, walk down to Main Street, across the bridge, and walk all the way to her home—almost a mile each way,” Gene remembers. “My persistence helped”.
Lois’s family welcomed the persistent young man into their home to talk and watch early television. It was during these walks and visits that they built a firm foundation of knowing and understanding one another. Gene also found a mentor and father figure in Lois’s dad, a local mechanic whom he admired so deeply that they eventually named their firstborn son, Gordon, after him.
Three-Cent Stamps and Sub-Zero Beginnings
When college took Gene to the New York State College for Teachers in Albany and Lois to Cortland University, the distance did nothing to dim their connection.
- Daily Devotion: They wrote letters to each other every single day.
- The Cost of Love: Postage stamps were just three cents back then.
- The Reward: Those daily letters cemented an unbreakable emotional bond.
After graduating—Gene with a master’s degree and Lois with her bachelor’s—they were finally ready for marriage. They wed in a quiet, intimate church ceremony surrounded by family and close friends.
Just months after their June wedding, Gene was drafted into the U.S. Army in September. Lois’s fierce commitment shone through immediately when Gene was assigned to an anti-aircraft battalion in Limestone, Maine. “I’m going with you,” she declared. Packing up their lives, they arrived in northern Maine in the dead of January, where the temperature plummeted to 20 degrees below zero during their first week. With the help of a local minister, they found a tiny two-room apartment where Lois cooked meals on a hot plate and shared a bathroom with the rest of the house. True to her passion for teaching, Lois quickly stepped in to teach a second-grade class on the local base, turning a challenging military relocation into a beautiful first chapter of teamwork.
60+ Years in Bemus Point: A Shared Calling
In 1958, the couple discovered a “little dot on the map” called Bemus Point, New York—a town they had coincidentally admired during their honeymoon drive a few years prior. After a quick 24-hour drive from Maine for an interview, Gene was hired as a high school teacher. They moved into a lovely home near the golf course, where they would remain for the next 67 years, raising their children, Gordon and Linda.
Both Gene and Lois became pillars of the Bemus Point school system. Lois taught second grade for roughly 25 years. “I always laugh at her,” Gene jokes, “she never graduated from second grade!” Gene initially taught American and world history, but later stepped up to revive and popularize the school’s Spanish program, eventually serving as the department chairman.
Because they were both educators, they spent every single summer traveling as a family. Together, they successfully visited all 50 American states. Gene loved the open road and personally handled the driving across 45 of the lower 48 states, alongside memorable group trips to Alaska, Hawaii, and beyond.
The Secrets to a 70-Year Marriage
When asked what advice they would offer to younger generations, Gene and Lois emphasize a four-part pillar: Faith, Commitment, Communication, and Love.
- The Art of Compromise: At home, they balanced everything—even their wildly different tastes in food—by purely concentrating on the meals they both liked and working together.
- Discreet Devotion: Decades after Gene stopped teaching Spanish, the couple still uses the language as their own secret code. When they want to pass a private message in a crowded room, they seamlessly whisper to each other in Spanish.
- A Living Legacy: Their commitment has served as a blueprint for their family. Their son Gordon has been married for 42 years, and their daughter Linda has been married for 41 years.
Finding “Home” Together at Bergquist Memorial
Nearly two years ago, health challenges—including structural difficulties with Lois’s legs and a severe bout with RSV that required intensive rehabilitation—prompted a move to assisted living at the Bergquist building.
Leaving their beloved home and the beautiful lakeside views of Bemus Point was undeniably difficult. “Our kids didn’t want us living alone anymore,” Gene notes gently. Lois worked tirelessly in physical therapy at Heritage Green just to gain the strength required to return to the assisted living dining room so she could be by Gene’s side.
Though they still hold a deep nostalgia for their house by the golf course, they have found an immense sense of gratitude within their new community. Today, they share beautifully connected adjoining rooms.
“I spend my entire day over here with him, and then just go to my room to sleep,” Lois explains. “The staff here is truly excellent—very caring and very helpful. I’m used to always giving and doing things for others, and it can be hard to sit back. But the one thing I can always do here is be kind to everybody, thank them, and make sure they know they’re doing a good job”.
For Gene and Lois, the physical structure of a house doesn’t define their home. With clear minds, shared memories of 50 states, a beautifully tight-knit family, and 70 years of unbroken vows, they know that as long as they are sitting side-by-side, they are exactly where they are meant to be.
