Reflections by Melissa Thies, Director of Admissions & Business Development
Every day in senior care brings us face-to-face with the journeys of remarkable individuals and their families. But for me, this mission is deeply personal.
My grandmother, Rita Thies, courageously battled Lewy body dementia, and several of my aunts and uncles have navigated their own painful journeys with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Watching the people you love face memory loss changes you forever. It deepens your empathy and grounds your sense of purpose. Through it all, my sweet, ever-loving, and devoted grandfather was able to keep my grandmother home, surrounded by love and dignity thanks to the unwavering support of my aunt, uncle, and dad, who stepped in every day to help care for her.
Every time I walk down the halls at Heritage and visit with our residents, I see that same family devotion, resilience, and vulnerability reflected right back at me. Caring for individuals with cognitive decline isn’t just a career path—it is a calling to surround families with understanding, dignity, and everyday grace. It is also why standing on the sidelines simply isn’t an option.
