Every single day, the staff across Heritage rehab and skilled nursing facilities bring a deep level of dedication and heart to their work. They don’t just see a checklist of clinical tasks; they see the vibrant, human histories of the seniors who trust them with their lives. Sometimes, the most profound moments of care don’t come from a medical chart—they come from simply listening to the quietest wishes of a resident’s heart.
This unwavering devotion is perfectly embodied by Laura John, a mainstay of the Heritage Park community. Laura has walked alongside our residents since 1999, beginning her journey as a unit secretary, transitioning into the role of transportation coordinator, and serving today as our trusted medical records secretary. Through every promotion and every decade, her guiding light has been the Heritage REACH core values: Respect for human dignity, Excellence in everything we do, Acceptance of every person, Compassion for all, and Honesty above all else.
A few years ago, while serving as the transportation coordinator, Laura was stepping in to help pass out breakfast meal trays at the Heritage Park rehab and skilled nursing facility.
It is important to note: passing breakfast trays was not Laura’s job. But at Heritage, caring for our seniors is never viewed as just a job description—it is an act of service. Our culture is built on a shared character where everyone chips in, steps up, and does whatever it takes to ensure our residents feel loved and valued.
As she walked into one gentleman’s room to hand him his breakfast, she struck up a casual conversation and asked him a simple, heartfelt question: “What do you miss the most since you’ve moved into Heritage Park?”
The resident paused, looked at her, and replied that what he missed above everything else was the simple routine of having coffee on his porch in the morning.
Little did he know, his words struck a deep chord. Of all the things in the world, one of Laura’s absolute favorite things to do is to wake up and enjoy coffee on her own porch in the morning. She knew exactly what that feeling of peace and routine meant to him.
Later that week, fueled by the Compassion and Acceptance that define the Heritage culture, Laura—who frequently picks up her morning coffee at Tim Hortons—decided to buy an extra one for her friend at Heritage Park.
She walked into his room with the warm cup and gave him a choice: would he like to drink his coffee right now, or would he prefer to wait until the front doors were officially open so that he could go sit outside and enjoy it on the porch?
The gentleman didn’t just thank her—he cried.
In that single, quiet moment, a Tim Hortons coffee cup became a bridge back to his independence, his favorite memories, and his dignity.
These are the people who serve the residents at Heritage Park. This is a living testimony to the deep empathy, hard work, and uncompromised integrity of our staff. To the rest of the world, buying a cup of coffee is a small, everyday gesture. But at Heritage, we know that these are the very gestures that make all the difference, transforming a facility into a true, loving home.
